The Gielgud Theatre is a beautiful and historic West End venue located on Shaftesbury Avenue in the heart of London’s Theatreland. With a seating capacity of 889 spread across three levels, it offers an intimate yet grand setting for world-classperformances. Known for its ornate Louis XVI interior and signature circular Regency staircase, the Gielgud Theatre London blends period elegance with modern comfort.
Now operated by Delfont Mackintosh Theatres, the Gielgud Theatre has become a home for acclaimed plays, star-led revivals, and high-profile productions. The venue regularly hosts major talent and memorable performances that add to its lasting charm. Whether you're seeing a powerful drama or a glittering West End revival, the Gielgud Theatre promises a quintessential London theatre experience.
The Gielgud Theatre opened on 27 December 1906 as the Hicks Theatre, named after actor and playwright Seymour Hicks. Designed by W.G.R. Sprague, it originally seated 970 and was a sister venue to the nearby Sondheim Theatre (previously called the Queen’s Theatre). In a remarkable twist of theatrical history, Hicks once stepped into a leading role mid-run to replace his wife Ellaline Terriss, creating one of the only husband-to-wife substitutions in musical theatre history.
After several name changes, the theatre was renamed the Gielgud Theatre in 1994 to honour the legendary actor Sir John Gielgud. Over the decades, it has hosted a mix of landmark productions, from early operettas and Ayckbourn premieres to bold revivals such as An Ideal Husband and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Refurbishments in 1987 and 2008 restored much of its original grandeur, ensuring the Gielgud Theatre London remains a treasured part of the West End.
