Celebrating 40 years of Live Aid

13th July 1985. It was the day the world came together, not in fear or mourning, but in music, hope, and the belief that a handful of chords and a chorus could save lives. Live Aid was more than a concert. It was a global phenomenon, a cultural earthquake that shifted the possibilities of what music and activism could achieve. Now, 40 years later, we’re cranking up the amps again - not in Wembley or JFK Stadium this time, but at Shaftesbury Theatre, where the hit musical Just For One Day is throwing a star-studded gala performance to mark the momentous anniversary.

If Live Aid was the ultimate stadium gig, then Just For One Day is its theatrical encore: a celebration, a time capsule, and a joyful reimagining of that earth-shaking day. The critically acclaimed musical, which opened to glowing reviews at the Old Vic last year, takes audiences behind the scenes of the iconic 16-hour event, blending real stories, big emotions, and of course, a soundtrack packed with era-defining hits. From Queen’s thunderous “Radio Ga Ga” hand claps to David Bowie’s transcendent “Heroes,” it captures not just the music, but the movement.

And now, on July 13, 2025, the company of Just For One Day is doing what Live Aid did best: bringing people together. The gala performance promises a night of special guests, surprises, and a renewed call to remember what can be achieved when art and activism collide. Fans are already buzzing about possible appearances from original Live Aid artists, and let’s be honest, if any night can bring out rock royalty, it’s this one.

Review Roundup: What are the critics saying about Just For One Day - The Live Aid Musical

The West End is turning up the volume as Just For One Day: The Live Aid Musical rocks back into London. Inspired by the legendary 1985 concert that changed the world, this bold new show hits the stage with global hits, real-life drama, and a tidal wave of nostalgia. Packed with anthems from Queen, U2, David Bowie, Elton John and more, it’s a celebration of the music, the moment—and the people who made it happen. But does this jukebox juggernaut hit all the right notes, or is it just living on a prayer?

What is Just For One Day - The Live Aid Musical about?

More than a concert re-creation, Just For One Day dives behind the scenes of the global phenomenon that was Live Aid. The show follows the people who came together to stage a global event in response to a devastating humanitarian crisis. Sparked by news footage of the famine in Ethiopia, what began as a bold idea became a history-making concert watched by over one and a half billion people.

Set to a soundtrack of era-defining hits, the musical captures the urgency, idealism and sheer chaos behind the scenes. It’s a story about the power of collective action—and the role music can play in bringing people together when it matters most. But does this stage version capture the spirit of a cultural turning point, or does it get lost in the noise?

Fall back into these top time travelling shows

Spring forward, fall back. It’s that time of year again – when the clock in your car either shows the right time, or is mysteriously one hour ahead (and not even Doc Brown has figured that out yet). As the nights draw in and tomorrow gifts us an extra hour of sleep, we’re left both confused and well-rested.

It’s surprising what a difference just sixty minutes can make. But what if you could move through hours, days, even decades at will? If you’ve ever wondered what it might feel like to live inside a time-bending show, wonder no more. London theatre is full of stories that skip between centuries, dive into the past, and glimpse into the future.

Here are the best time-travelling theatre shows to catch right now in the West End and beyond…

1. Just For One Day – The Live Aid Musical

What if you could step back into 1985 and witness the making of one of the greatest concerts of all time? That’s exactly what happens in Just For One Day.

When Suzanne hands her daughter Jemma her treasured Live Aid programme, the two are transported back to the extraordinary day that changed music forever. The show shifts between the present day and the summer of 1985, charting how the legendary concert came together and why its message still resonates today.

Featuring the music of Bob Dylan, David Bowie, The Who, Queen, U2, Paul McCartney, Elton John and more, this musical celebrates the power of community, compassion, and rock ‘n’ roll history. It’s not just a trip down memory lane, it’s a reminder of what humanity can achieve when it comes together.

2. Back to the Future the Musical

The Olivier and WhatsOnStage Award-winning stage adaptation of the iconic 80s film is still the ultimate time travel trip.

Climb into a souped-up DeLorean with teenage hero Marty McFly as he crashes from 1985 into 1955 and meets some very familiar faces. But when his presence threatens to erase his own existence, Marty must make sure his parents fall in love – all while trying to get back to his own timeline.

Packed with dazzling effects, laughs, and that unbeatable Alan Silvestri score, Back to the Future: The Musical is a family favourite that’s been delighting West End audiences for four years. Think your family’s complicated? At least you’re not accidentally competing with your dad for your mum’s affection.

3. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

The eighth story in the Harry Potter universe continues to cast its spell on the Palace Theatre.

Set nineteen years after the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry is now an overworked Ministry of Magic employee and struggling father of three. His youngest son, Albus, feels crushed by the weight of the Potter legacy – and decides to take matters into his own hands. With best friend Scorpius Malfoy (yes, Draco’s son), Albus uses a Time-Turner to travel back and alter the past. But in the wizarding world, changing one small detail can unravel everything.

As past and present collide, both Harry and Albus must face uncomfortable truths about family, legacy, and destiny. Whether you devoured the books on release day or discovered the films years later, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is magical theatre for all generations.

Live Aid Facts

Simultaneously held at London’s Wembley Stadium and the John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the music of Live Aid (with the help of two satellites) brought the world together in 1985.

A record-breaking concert spanning 16 hours (only slightly shorter than the portaloo queue at Glastonbury) raised more than £150 million for famine relief. Now, four decades later, the concert is still considered one of the biggest music events in history.

The mega musical, announced by The Old Vic, features the music from David Bowie, Bob Dylan, and more, is written by best-selling author John O’Farrell and directed by Luke Sheppard. The production will have a strictly limited run from 26 January, so you have plenty of time to refamiliarise yourself with the work of the 70+ artists (?!) that took part in the original gig, and memorise the below fun facts to impress your friends ahead of curtain up!
