What is Jesus Christ Superstar about?

Jesus Christ Superstar is the groundbreaking rock opera that retells the final days of Jesus Christ through the perspective of Judas Iscariot. Set against rising political tension and personal betrayal, the story explores faith, power, loyalty and destiny as events spiral towards an inevitable conclusion.

Driven by its iconic score, the production blends soaring vocals, contemporary staging and raw emotional intensity, creating a visceral theatrical experience that has resonated with audiences worldwide. This latest West End revival places the music and storytelling at its heart, reintroducing the show to a new generation in a landmark London setting.

Jesus Christ Superstar: A Landmark Rock Opera

The iconic rock opera that has taken the musical theatre world by storm once more, didn’t always have a place in the theatrical world. Initially Webber and Rice could not get backing for a stage production so the composers took it into their own hands and released the score as a concept album in 1970. Following its immediate success, Jesus Christ Superstar musical debuted in 1971 on the Broadway stage. Later in 1972, Jesus Christ Superstar opened in London at the Palace Theatre.

In 2016, 45 years since the musical debut on Broadway, director Timothy Sheader revived Jesus Christ Superstar musical at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. The acclaimed production won an Olivier award for the Best Musical Revival so naturally, the production was destined to have its well deserved West End transfer to the London Palladium. Due to the demand, a transfer was announced imminently to continue the production into the winter at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
