Rent the musical has been announced to have a one-month run at Manchester’s Hope Mill Theatre this summer. The production will be directed by Luke Sheppard (& Juliet and Spring Awakening); further details including cast and creatives are yet to be announced. The announcement of a UK production of Rent has already stirred huge excitement, which makes the likelihood of a West End transfer possible.
The Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning musical Rent is set in New York’s East Village and centres its story around a group of bohemians who live under the threat of losing their apartment; even though their new landlord is their old best friend. Mark and Roger are at the forefront of the small group of characters that the musical focuses on. The pair struggle to create art, as well as struggling with love, life and living in the shadow of HIV.
The multi-award-winning musical Rent had a 12-year run on Broadway and over its time won an impressive four Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It features timeless musical theatre songs by Jonathan Larson including the beloved ‘Seasons of Love’, ‘La Vie Boheme’, ‘Take Me or Leave Me’, ‘One Song Glory’, and title song ‘Rent’.
Rent has a book, music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, who sadly died the night before the off-Broadway premiere.
The original Broadway cast featured Anthony Rapp as Mark Cohen, Adam Pascal as Roger Davis, Daphne Rubin-Vega as Mimi Marquez, Jesse L. Martin as Tom Collins, Wilson Jermaine Heredia as Angel Dumott Schunard, Idina Menzel as Maureen Johnson, Fredi Walker as Joanne Jefferson and Taye Diggs as Benjamin Coffin III.
