About the MAMMA MIA! musical

The bright and loving Sophie lives with her mother Donna Sheridan on the idyllic islands of Greece, and she has a dream - to have her father walk her down the aisle. Only…Sophie doesn’t know who her father is. One fateful day when she stumbles upon her mother’s old diaries, she finds three men’s names scribbled amongst hearts - Harry, Bill and Sam.

Sophie decides that it’s time to take matters into her own hands.

She doesn’t know which old flame to invite to her wedding, so she invites them all. When the three men dock up on the island, things take an interesting turn, and Sophie tries everything in her power to figure out the ultimate secret - which one of them is her father?

The history of MAMMA MIA!

From West End production to global phenomenon, MAMMA MIA! is Judy Craymer’s ingenious vision of turning ABBA’s timeless songs into story-telling magic. To date, the production has been seen by over 70 million people in 16 different languages across 50 productions. In 2011, it became the first Western musical ever to be staged in Mandarin in the People’s Republic of China.

MAMMA MIA! originally opened in London at the Prince Edward Theatre on 6 April 1999, before transferring to the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004. The musical re-opened at the Novello Theatre in 2012, where it recently celebrated its London 27th birthday on 6th April 2026. MAMMA MIA! in London has been seen by over 11 million people. It has played over 10,000 performances, and has broken box office records in all three of its London homes.

MAMMA MIA! is also known for being a box-office movie hit. Produced by Judy Craymer, MAMMA MIA! The Movie, starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, is the highest-grossing live-action musical film of all time, whilst its sequel is the highest-earning musical sequel in history. Facts and critical acclaim for MAMMA MIA!

• MAMMA MIA! is the 3rd longest-running musical in West End history.
• 400 metres of Lycra are used to create the Super Trouper outfits for MAMMA MIA! in London
• With all those ABBA tunes, it’s no wonder that Phyllida Lloyd directed both MAMMA MIA! the movie and the MAMMA MIA! West End and Broadway productions.
• To date, there are nine cast recordings worldwide. All of ABBA’s hits can be listened to in German, Dutch, Spanish, Swedish, Korean, French, Japanese, and Chinese.
• It took Judy Craymer 10 years to persuade Andersson and Ulvaeus to create the musical we know and love.
• Craymer was inspired by ‘The Winner Takes It All’ to create the musical. The song started the process of creating a strong female lead character: that character would eventually become Donna.

What is the nearest tube station to the Novello Theatre?

The closest tube station to the Novello Theatre is Covent Garden (Piccadilly) which is a 6-minute walk and Holborn station (Central, Piccadilly), a 9-minute walk to the theatre. 

What is the difference between MAMMA MIA! the musical and the movie?

Meryl Streep is a busy woman, she will not be performing on the West End stage, maybe one day. 

MAMMA MIA! The Musical includes some new songs you might not have heard from the hit blockbuster, like Under Attack. Some of the songs from the sequel, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, are also in the stage production; The Name Of The Game, One Of Us and Knowing Me, Knowing You.

Are there MAMMA MIA! London performances on Sundays?

There are no MAMMA MIA! West End performances on Sundays. 

Is MAMMA MIA! suitable for children under 5?

Please note, the West End production of MAMMA MIA! does not allow children under the age of 3 into the theatre. The show is recommended for ages 5+, but all ticket holders under the age of 16 must be accompanied by and sat next to the adult.
