The history of the Savoy Theatre
The Savoy Theatre opened in 1881 and holds a unique place in theatre history—it was the first public building in the world to be entirely lit by electricity. Built by impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte to showcase the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan, the theatre quickly became synonymous with the “Savoy Operas” and a new era of British musical theatre.
The original building was destroyed by fire in 1990, but the theatre was meticulously rebuilt and restored, reopening in 1993 with many of its original features lovingly preserved. The current design blends modern comfort with classic Art Deco elegance, offering a refined yet welcoming environment.
